Lab Technician, Molecular Markers for Preterm Birth

Sam Hawkins has worked in the Center for Persons with Disabilities, Biomedical Laboratory since April 2010.  His current lab project is developing an assay for detecting mutations in the gene GJB2 (Connexin 26) which is involved in newborn hearing loss.  He is majoring in Biological Engineering and plans to graduate from USU in Spring 2013.  His other lab experience will be a summer internship at Johns Hopkins in 2011.  Sam is a member of the USU track team and National Collegiate Honor Society and he enjoys playing the guitar and piano, reading, and spending time with his fiancé and family.
