IOTI - Family Preservation

Project Details

Project Context:
Children who have disabilities often display challenging behaviors that are difficult to handle. Parents may struggle to find effective positive behavior supports to help the children under their care be successful. Many caregivers have no or few supports that they can turn to help learn positive behavior support strategies.

Using positive behavior strategies versus more punishment oriented methods have been proven to be most effective in changing problem behaviors. Research-based positive behavioral support incorporates strategies that are selectively used on the basis of an individual's needs, characteristics, and preferences.

Project Focus
The training offered by this project will outline the primary, secondary, and tertiary levels of prevention and intervention when applying positive behavior strategies. Trainees will understand the importance of accommodations and teaching appropriate behaviors to help people with disabilities get their needs and wants met and bring them success in their environments.

This project will provide training to:
- parents who have no or few supports to help them manage difficult behaviors in their children with disabilities.
- agency professionals and paraprofessionals who work with these families to better coordinate between settings and services to increase the success of people with disabilities.

The project will provide web access to training information, as well as video vignettes to increase competency.

The project will rely on outside agencies and parent groups to define needs, assist in recruiting training participants, locate training facilities, and coordinate training needs.
