Project Details

Project Context:
Often mental health consumers and family members do not feel their perspective is valued in mental health treatment or even that they can be involved in treatment decisions. The National Alliance on Mental Health (NAMI) Provider Education Program was developed to address the learning needs of line personnel at public agencies who work directly with individuals living with severe and persistent mental illness.

Project Focus:
The Provider Education Program provides a detailed clinical picture of collaborative secondary intervention strategies and fosters a more positive and compassionate clinical understanding of the realities on consumer and family experience. Mental health consumers and families serve as part of the training team to present a penetrating subjective view of the family and consumer experience with serious mental illness. Training participants will include case managers, psychiatric technicians, receptionists, social workers, clinical supervisors and other line staff of the Veterans Administration Health Care System, Valley Mental Health, agencies of the Department of Human Services, and other community partners.

Products/Services:
1. One three-day training for the five person training teams
2. Five 10-week education courses for groups of approximately 20-30 providers
