Project Context:
Since July of 2000, the Salt Lake City Police Department has conducted training that certifies law enforcement officers as Crisis Intervention Team Officers by the Utah Division of Substance Abuse and Mental Health (DSAMH). The DSAMH stands behind this training by certifying the officers as true professionals and first responders to situations involving a person in a mental health crisis.
Project Focus:
The Crisis Intervention and Justice System Training (SLPD) project will train enforcement officers to become aware of mental illness and the impact it has on the consumer, the consumer's family, and the community. With this training, officers will learn tactics to effectively deal with a person experiencing a mental health crisis. With a newfound empathetic approach, officers will be prepared to provide safer interventions for the consumer, the officers, and the community.
Products/Services:
The SLPD training is open to all law enforcement officers in the state of Utah. Trained officers will receive a two-year certification and must complete 4 hours of continuing education in every 2-year period to remain certified.
Since 2002, 1148 law enforcement officers in 16 Utah counties have been certified as Crisis Intervention Team members.
