More Information
Project WebsiteProject Details
Project Context:
Since 1994, the Utah Schools for the Deaf and the Blind (USDB) has offered certification assistance to uncertified persons working as sign language interpreters in rural areas statewide. In 1996, USDB received a grant from Utah State University, Interagency Outreach Training Initiative (IOTI) , to expand training that would include employees working for other agencies.
Project Focus:
This 2008-09 expansion will provide interpreter training expertise to individuals that otherwise would not have the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills in sign language interpreting. The USDB will be able to continue with the training services that are already in place.
Products/Services:
Through technology, the USDB is able to reach individuals statewide. Technology activities include:
1. The Utah Educational Network broadcasts USDB's interpreter training weekly to nine locations.
2. Three weekend immersion workshops are presented throughout the year on the campus of USDB in Ogden. Overnight accommodations and meals are available free of charge.
3. A one-week intensive summer camp is offered to prepare participants for the State of Utah's interpreter certification tests.
4. USDB provides a small reimbursement stipend to individuals taking state certification tests who have participated consistently in year round training.
Over the past eight years, Utah Schools for the Deaf and the Blind has helped over 100 individuals pass state certification tests
