In 2013 the Utah State Courts formed a court/community partnership, an interdisciplinary network of guardianship stakeholders as an ongoing problem-solving body, working to improve the system of services for vulnerable adults, caregivers, and guardians. Participants represent community-based organizations, state agencies, caregivers, guardians, attorneys, social workers and medical professionals. The need for in-person training for procedures in guardianship/conservatorship, and life-planning tools, including advance healthcare directive, powers of attorney and representative payees was identified.

The objectives of the program includes providing life planning tools and alternatives to guardianship to promote safety, dignity and respect for vulnerable adult and prepare families, professionals, and vulnerable adults to navigate the world of advance life-planning tools, guardianship procedures, and community services.

At the end of the training, a wealth of information on life-planning tools and guardianship will translated into Spanish to help to refer minority groups to the Utah State Courts web pages.In addition, an online training program was posted on the Court website and that is available to the public.

Training for both English speakers and minorities is offered to professionals and the general public. Training participants have included professionals or representatives from senior centers, ILC's, care centers, District Court, AAAs, Nursing Homes, Hospice, Adult Protective Services, social workers and geriatric care managers, Health Department, Alzheimer Assoc, private attorneys and guardians, and caregivers of vulnerable adults who, in turn, will be able to provide references and training for their clients.
