Project Details

This training program is offered to rural professionals in Utah who are not currently evaluating children and youth suspected of having ASD. In order to build confidence in the diagnostic process and to assure that the diagnosis of ASD is made correctly, the training team will provide face-to-face training and video and telephone supervision and mentoring for up to one year. The ultimate goal is to assist families in securing the appropriate treatment for their child with ASD by increasing access to an appropriate evaluation for ASD and decreasing the wait time and distance families have to travel for these services.

The CPD Clinical Services Program will train professionals in rural areas of Utah on evidence-based, interdisciplinary evaluation techniques to differentially diagnose children and youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Training will emphasize the Diagnostic Observation Scale-2nd Ed. (ADOS-2) and the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R) which are required ASD assessment tools in the State of Utah for children and families who receive state funding.

Outcomes include increased dissemination to professionals working in rural Utah about symptoms and behaviors of children with ASD; Increase knowledge about ASD diagnostic criteria; Increase skills in ASD diagnostic processes; Improve professional confidence in making the ASD diagnosis; Increase the number of children evaluated for ASD; Decrease travel distance and wait times for families to receive comprehensive ASD evaluations.
