Project Details

Project Context:
In many locations around the country, children and youth whose special health care needs include communication disorders are not receiving the amount or quality of services that lead to effective remediation of their speech, language, and hearing impairments. There is a significant need for leaders in Communication Disorders who can impact the amount and type of services that are available for these children in rural areas of the United States.

Project Focus:
In a collaborative effort lead by the Department of Communicative Disorders and Deaf Education at USU, the Utah Regional Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (URLEND) at the CPD and the National Center for Hearing Assessment and Management (NCHAM) will provide courses and training experiences for doctoral and masters level trainees in Communicative Disorders. The USU-Future Leaders in Speech-Language and Audiology (FLISPA) project will meet the need to train interdisciplinary, multi-method leaders with the skills to fill university, health care administration, or governmental service positions who work with children with communication disorders.

Products/Services:
FLIPSA will train future leaders who can be effective advocates for children with communication disorders. They will provide classroom and clinical opportunities that will offer practical knowledge of children's health care needs, evidence-based practices, health care policy, government policy, and effective and efficient models of continuing education.
