Lil' Aggies Transition Classroom Prepares Toddlers for District Preschools
CPD's Project
Up To 3 Early InterventionThe Up to 3 early intervention program serves infants and toddlers from birth up to age three who have delays or disabilities. As the toddlers near their third birthday, Up to 3 offers a transition classroom just for them called the Lil’Aggies classroom, taught by Jennifer Lovell. There are three classes with up to eight children in each class that are taught at the CPD, and another class that is taught in Brigham City by Jessica McKenna.
In this transition classroom, the children are working on many skills that will prepare them for the district preschool classrooms that they will go into when they turn three. There are different activities and lessons prepared that focus on the goals of each individual child in the class, as well as an emphasis on following routines, sitting quietly for longer periods of time, following directions, and being separated from their parents for a couple of hours.
Another important skill that they are learning is how to socialize with their peers. They learn how to play together and get along, but they also learn new skills from watching other children who may be more verbal or physically active. Often, typically developing children from the community become part of the classroom for a short time. This is a great benefit to the Up to 3 children, as they provide a model for the transitioning children to follow as they begin to talk more, follow directions, and learn new concepts.
The Lil’ Aggies classroom is a valuable, productive, and fun classroom for toddlers to attend as they transition out of Up to 3 and into community services.
