CPD Research Aids Newborn Hearing Loss Detection
CPD's Project
Genetic Hearing Loss TestingResearchers at the CPD Biomedical Laboratory have been awarded a seed grant to aid them in developing a less expensive test to identify genetic causes of deafness in newborns. Currently, DNA sequencing tests run about $300. This research project will use new advanced technology to see if it is possible to test a common genetic mutation for about $50 per sample.
Biomedical Laboratory Director Dr. Anthony R. Torres states that such inexpensive testing will allow for all newborn babies to be tested and can have an immediate impact in the early neurodevelopment of a child by allowing for the placement of hearing assistance technology.
