Eduardo A. Ortiz, Ph.D., J.D.

Eduardo got his Ph.D. in Sociology (2009) from Utah State University. His dissertation work focused on the influence of family structures and the role of siblings on early language development of preschool Latino children. Eduardo also holds a Law Degree (J.D.) from the Catholic University of Ecuador, his native country.

Currently, Eduardo is a Researcher at the Research and Evaluation Division of the Center for Persons with Disabilities at Utah State University. At present, he is working on the Using Technology for Emergent Literacy and Language UTELL project. Eduardo was also a trainee with the URLEND program and now coordinates the URLEND South Main Clinic project activities. He also worked for the PEECSE program and coordinated its project activities. Eduardo worked with the National Children Study-Language Measure project. Also, he is involved in writing, translating, interpretating and facilitating the CPD's international efforts for grant proposals.

Eduardo has been part of many other CPD research projects mainly focused on early education including the Bilingual Early Language and Literacy Support project (BELLS), Head Start-USU project, the SHELLS project, Early Reading First-Utah project, the PICCOLO project, Champions-Inc project, Finding Utah's Most In Need Children project, the Utah Education Network project, and the New Mexico Extended School Year project.

He also teaches several classes at Utah State University including Introduction to Sociology (Soc. 1010), Social Problems (Soc. 1020), Social Research Methods (Soc. 3110), and Population and Society (Soc. 3200).

Eduardo has been highly involved in community work, and because of that he was the recipient of the 2008 USU Diversity award. He is a board member of the following organizations: Bridger Elementary School Board, Parks and Recreations, City of Logan, and Somebody's Attic, a non-profit organization that supports CAPSA, and other child and family abuse prevention programs.

Along with his work in the United States, Eduardo also currently writes on educational topics for a local newspaper in Ecuador.
