The PEECSE (Promoting Effective Engagement, Communication, and Self-Regulation with English Language Learners) Grant, being administered for OWCAP by Jill Oberndorfer in partnership with Dr. Lisa Boyce and Dr. Mark Innocenti, researchers from Utah State University, is up and running in classrooms 1000 G/H, 1000 I/J and 1000 K/L. Digital cameras and photo printers purchased by the grant have been used in participating classrooms for the children to create books on topics that have originated from the children's ideas. The USU researchers have conducted training with the teachers on dialogic reading techniques and the teachers have been videotaped practicing the these techniques with their students. Future training is planned on the new Second Step kits. Plans are being discussed about adding a math component to the curriculum as well as providing mentoring to the classrooms. Data has started to be collected to assess the participating children's language and social skills and will be used to guage the effectiveness of the curriculum and provide information on how the curriculum can be modified/improved to better serve the children.
