Hearts for DLS

February 4, 2016 by Sue Reeves

happy-valentines-day_Mk5rKo_d_LDSL participants are busy making Valentines cards for their families, and would love to make extras for you! A $10 donation brings you a handmade, personalized Valentine. That same $10 donation provides two hours of respite care for a person with a disability and their loved ones.

If you buy four Valentines for $40—that’s a whole day of respite care—we’ll throw in a fifth Valentine as a thank you. Valentines can be personalized with names and/or a special message for your loved one.

To order your handmade Valentines, visit Julie Wilson at the CPD on the first floor of the HSRC, or Drake Rasmussen at the DSL (857 N 800 E) and pre-pay with cash or check before 5 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9. You can pick up your Valentines at the same location between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 12. If you have an office on campus, we’d be happy to deliver them to you on Friday in time for you to give to your loved ones.

Eat turkey, help DSL

November 20, 2015 by Sue Reeves

Image of turkeyThis Thanksgiving we all have a lot to be thankful for. For some members of our community, this includes being able to participate in our Developmental Skills Lab (DSL). DSL provides safe, stimulating and fun care and activities for adults with disabilities, as well as respite for their families and those who take care of them. Now you have an opportunity to help make sure this service is available to someone who needs it. Please join us this Friday, November 20 for a Thanksgiving turkey feast to support ongoing care for one of our DSL participants. Leave your boring old sack lunch at home this Friday and for $10 we will provide you a festive feast of turkey and all the fixings, brought to you by Lee’s Market Place. Reserve your spot by purchasing your lunch in advance at the CPD main office, DSL main office, or simply e-mail Shane Johnson that you are interested and he will stop by your desk for payment. This is open to everyone, so feel free to invite friends and family to join you. We hope to see you there!

When: Friday, November 20, 12:00pm – 1:00 pm

Where: HSRC 105

How: Just bring $10, cash, or check made out to the “CPD Developmental Skills Lab” to the CPD front office, DSL office, or to the lunch on Friday.

DSL happenings: Summertime is fun time

August 17, 2015 by Kelly Smith

DSL guest blogger Cindy Jones

Cindy Jones (CJ) is a guest blogger for the CPD’s Developmental Skills Laboratory (DSL), a day program for adults with disabilities. Each month, she’ll be sharing the fun activities that go on at the DSL.

Here at DSL we had lots of fun in July. I liked Super Hero day the most, because it was fun! We made paper dolls and dressed them up as super heroes. Everyone came dressed as their favorite super hero. I wore my Aggie gear that day.

We also had fun at the movies. We saw the new Minions movie. It was funny!

One day for lunch we drove up to 2nd dam and had a picnic. Some of us fed the ducks.

On another day we went outside, collected some leaves and traced them.

In July, there were a lot of people who had birthdays. We had fun celebrating them by baking a cake and singing Happy Birthday. We also made cards for each of them.

Heidi’s Happenings: SpongeBob & Science Day

Heidi Hill is a guest blogger for the CPD’s Developmental Skills Laboratory (DSL), a day program for adults with disabilities. Heidi loves to type and each month she’ll be sharing the fun activities that she and her “buds” are doing at DSL.

In the month of February and March we were busy at the DSL Worksite.  In February, we celebrated Valentine’s Day by giving each other cards and candy! We also made Valentines for our CPD friends, and that was lots of fun! We also had a big breakfast for Valentine’s Day.

We went on a fun field trip to Great Harvest Bread Company and learned about how bread was made.  We then got to sample some yummy cinnamon burst bread.

We went to see one under-the-sea bud named SpongeBob at the movie theatre. It was fun to watch SpongeBob and his buds from Krabbie Cakes go on the beach and have some fun in the sun.

In March, we had Science day! We did many experiments: We did exploding Jello, made a volcano, put an egg in vinegar and now it has turned into a bouncie ball!  We are planning to go kite flying in March and going to see “Cinderella,” too!

Heidi’s Happenings: Snow day!

Jericka dipped her hands in paraffin and wrapped them in plastic bags for spa day!

We sang songs about snow. Then we talked about bundling up, playing safely outdoors, making snow men and snow-angels and snow forts. We took to the theater. We enjoyed “Night at the Museum.” It was really a good movie and we enjoyed popcorn as we were watching the flick!

We made bubble bath. We enjoyed doing lots of activities ’round this glass-windowed work site. Everybody enjoyed doing things.

We went by van down to the bowling alley. There we knocked down pins with our own black bowling ball. Heidi had a score of 76. Cindy had a score of 57!

We also had food fun and made some healthy treats! We also had a spa and pajama day and put warm paraffin on our hands and put them in baggies. We looked pretty silly, but, boy, did it ever feel good!
